What "portable" actually means
A portable career survives:
- A cross-country move every 24–36 months
- Occasional OCONUS orders (sometimes with SOFA work restrictions)
- Time-zone shifts of up to 8 hours
- Gaps of 4–8 weeks during the move itself
That rules out most "remote" jobs that quietly require you to sit in a US business-hours timezone from a fixed W-2 state.
The 8 fields worth building in
1. Licensed clinical work with a Compact license — nursing (NLC), PT, OT, counseling (Counseling Compact rolled out to 30+ states by 2025), and psychology (PSYPACT). 2. Software engineering — asynchronous, portfolio-based, and the industry has 15+ years of remote culture built in. 3. Technical writing / instructional design — high-margin, contract-friendly, moves cleanly between employers. 4. Cybersecurity (GRC + Compliance) — cleared spouses especially: audit and compliance work is remote-heavy and pays $95K–$150K without needing a red-team background. 5. Bookkeeping / fractional accounting — QuickBooks ProAdvisor + a niche (e.g., e-commerce, medical practices) = portable book of business. 6. UX research / user research ops — remote-native, interview-based, and demand is still outpacing supply. 7. Federal remote roles (GS-11 through GS-14) — many DoD, VA, and DHS positions are now telework-eligible and follow you PCS to PCS. 8. Independent consulting in your prior specialty — the one nobody talks about. If you have 5+ years in any field, going 1099 through your own LLC is often the *most* portable option.
What to avoid
- Jobs that require an active state-specific license without a compact (real estate, most legal roles, in-state teaching).
- Sales roles tied to a physical territory.
- W-2 roles at companies that require residency in specific states for tax reasons (many financial services firms).
The move
