The myth
"75% of resumes are rejected by the ATS before a human ever sees them."
That stat has been repeated for a decade. It's from a 2012 Preptel press release. There is no research behind it.
What actually happens
Modern ATS platforms (Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, iCIMS, Ashby) do not auto-reject resumes based on formatting. They parse your resume into fields, store it, and let recruiters filter. The filters recruiters actually use:
1. Keyword search — "did the word 'Kubernetes' appear anywhere?" 2. Knock-out questions — "Are you legally authorized to work in the US?" 3. Years of experience — self-reported, not parsed from your resume
What this means for you
- Two-column resumes are fine in 2026. Every modern parser handles them.
- Emojis, icons, and colored headers are fine.
- A .docx file is fine. A .pdf is fine. Don't submit an image or a Canva-exported .png.
- What actually matters: do the exact phrases from the job description appear in your resume, in context? If the JD says "incident response" and your resume says "responded to production issues," you will lose the keyword search.
The right way to tailor
Copy the job description. Highlight every noun phrase that appears twice or more. Those are the required keywords. Rewrite your bullets so each of those phrases appears at least once, in a bullet that describes something you actually did. That's it. That's the whole game.
